Hi Sarah, My dog growls and barks at other dogs when we’re out walking. I’ve been giving him a correction every time he does it (which has worked). The other day he bit another dog and he’s never done that before. Now I don’t know what to do. Please help! Shane P Hi Shane, I believe there are a number of potential issues when using corrections in training. Firstly, when using punishment like corrections, you usually get a suppression of behaviour, rather than a change to the underlying cause of why the behaviour occurred in the first place. Kind [...]

I get a lot of people asking me about force-free training. Why am I a force-free trainer? How does that differ to other styles? Why don’t I use punishment in training? There is SO much information out there on training dogs and dog behaviour. From the internet to You-Tube, TED talks, online tutorials, breeders, trainers, behaviourists, vets, pet stores, neighbours, friends and other dog owners – the amount of information available is endless. “How do I teach my dog they’ve done the wrong thing?”

Hi Sarah, How do I let my dog know when they’ve done the wrong thing? Wouldn’t it be better to train using both positive and punishment methods so that the dog learns right from wrong? Sylvia C Hi Sylvia, This is often a “hot topic” amongst trainers who have differing opinions about this issue, and you would think that rewarding the “good” behaviour and punishing the “bad” behaviour would be the easiest method for the dog, right? Unfortunately, not so. Imagine if you were in a foreign country where you didn’t speak the language or know the customs. Let’s [...]
